Norwich & Peterborough History

The former Norwich Building Society was founded on 6th April 1852 under the imposing title of 'Norwich and District Provident Permanent Benefit Building and Freehold Land Society'.

The name accurately described the area in which the Building Society operated and reflected the fact that it had been established for the mutual benefits of its members.

After the Second World War, the Building Society eventually became an incorporated, legal entity and ceased to act in the name of its trustees and to mark this the name was changed to Norwich Building Society.

Peterborough Provincial Benefit Building Society was formed in the winter of 1860 by a group of railwaymen. The railway boom and increasing population in the area was making housing scarce.

The Peterborough Building Society incorporated the King's Lynn Building Society in 1967, the Stamford Building Society in 1980 and the Argyle Building Society in 1985.
