The Abbey National Building Society was formed following the merger of the Abbey Road Building Society and the National Building Society in 1944.

On 12 July 1989, Abbey became a plc and floated on the London Stock Exchange. The share price at the time was £1.30.

In August 1996, Abbey National merged with the National and Provincial Building Society. Their branch network increased by almost two hundred and they gained three million customers.

On 25 September 2003, Abbey National changed its name to Abbey, unveiled a new look and feel and announced their intention to 'turn banking on its head'.

On 26 July Abbey and Banco Santander announced that they had reached agreement on the terms of a recommended acquisition by Banco Santander of Abbey. Following shareholders' approval at Abbey's and Santander's EGMs, the acquisition was formally approved by the courts and Abbey became part of the Grupo Santander Group on 12 November, 2004.

Grupo Santander is one of the world's top ten banks. Grupo Santander will continue to use the Abbey name in the UK and plans to provide key resources and know-how to accelerate Abbey's personal financial services strategy and bring benefits to Abbey's customers through further improvements to its accounts and services.
